With a break in the weather comes a slowdown in new flu cases being reported in Franklin County.

Although the official flu season is still a month from ending, only 109 new flu cases were reported to the the county health department last week.

The number is still high but it is down from a season peak of 357 cases reported the last week of 2017.

Public Health Supervisor Tony Buel says the lower reports are a positive and are trending with neighboring Jefferson County as well.

However, he warns the lower reports could be simply due to lack of additional new flu testing this late in the season.

According to the most recent numbers on Friday, there are now 676 reported cases of the flu in children ages 5 to 14 in Franklin County, which is 24 percent of the total cases reported.

Twenty percent of the cases were reported in the 25 to 49 age range with 586.

People over 65 represent 16 percent of reported flu cases with 435, and the 50 to 64 age group has 417 cases, representing 15 percent of the cases reported thus far.

Ages zero to 4 make up just under 15 percent with 406 combined cases and people ages 15 to 24 are in the 10 percent range with 265 cases reported.

Last week, statewide, 5,064 new influenza cases were reported (2,118 influenza A, 2,855 influenza B and 91 untyped).

A season-to-date total of 112,746 laboratory-positive influenza cases (76,866 influenza A, 34,308 influenza B and 1,572 untyped) have been reported in Missouri thus far.
