Misdiagnosed boy, 13, dies after sinus infection spread to his brain

A misdiagnosed 13-year-old boy in Michigan is dead after a sinus infection spread to his brain, killing him.

USA Today reports Marquel Brumley was diagnosed with a "viral infection" a few weeks ago after showing symptoms of the common cold. A relative told WNEM that doctors said the eighth grade student's illness would "run its course," but the symptoms got worse.

According to People magazine, Brumley was rushed to the emergency room multiple times in February and given over-the-counter pain medication for migraines. He lost muscle movement in the left side of his face and his eye was swollen shut before he was finally diagnosed with a sinus infection.

An MRI showed the infection had traveled through his bone to blood vessels in his brain, creating blood clots that can lead to strokes. Doctors were able to treat the infection in surgery, but couldn't stop the clots; Brumley died days later on March 11.

"The doctor came in and said we -- he has a sinus infection, it has penetrated through the bone into the blood vessels in the brain and we see some blood clots," Brumley's aunt, Nicole Alexander, told WJRT.

The Cleveland Clinic told People that sinus infections can clear up on their own, but on rare occasions it can spread to the eyes and brain, causing blindness or death.

Alexander told People that her nephew was a straight-A student who played sports and music.

"He was a football player, played the trumpet in the band, you couldn't find flaws with the kid," Alexander said. "He was really helpful. He loved helping people and always had a smile on his face. His daily goal was to make everybody smile."

The family has raised more than $14,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for medical and funeral costs. According to the fundraising page, the family "is taking comfort in know he saved 7 lives with the gift of his organs."
