LANCASTER COUNTY, Neb. -- A Lancaster County deputy carrying Narcan helped save a man suffering from an opioid overdose early Saturday morning.
Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner said a deputy was dispatched to a home near 110th and A streets at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday, with the caller saying his friend was convulsing and having a medical emergency.
The caller said an Uber driver dropped him off at his 23-year-old friend's home, where he found his friend convulsing.
Wagner said the caller started CPR until the deputy arrived. A short time later, a medic arrived on scene and determined the man was suffering from an opioid overdose.
The medic was able to use a Narcan kit that the deputy was carrying to administer the antidote to man, who was then transported to Bryan West Campus where he was treated and released. Narcan is a brand name of Naloxone, a drug that reverses the effects of opioid overdose.
LSO purchased 60 Narcan kits for $5,800 in November using money from the office's forfeited drug assets fund.
Wagner said it was the first time any of the kits the deputies carry has been used. He also said all deputies on patrol are equipped the Narcan kits.
Wagner said LSO is still working to determine what the man took and where.
