Allegheny Health Network Building $80 Million Cancer Center

PITTSBURGH, PA - Highmark Health and the Allegheny Health Network have announced plans for an $80 million, 90,000 square-foot cancer center specializing in cutting-edge therapies and serving as the research hub for the AHN Cancer Institute.

The AHN Cancer Institute Academic Center will be built at Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side, the AHN's flagship hospital. Expected to open in late 2019, the facility is part of a $225 million commitment Highmark and AHN have pledged to upgrade cancer treatment.

"The demand for expert cancer care is growing in our region," David Holmberg, Highmark Health president and CEO, said in a statement. "Our significant investment in the AHN Cancer Institute will not only greatly enhance our patients' and members' access to care, but also transform it through the extraordinary work of our caregivers and the advanced capabilities of the facilities we are developing."

The academic center will be located on East North Avenue between the hospital's south tower and Sandusky Street parking garage. It will have two floors above ground, two floors underground and will be connected to the hospital's Magovern Conference Center and front rotunda entrance.

AHN officials said the center will boast state-of-the-art radiation oncology capabilities, 49 chemotherapy infusion bays; conference and exam rooms with telemedicine capabilities; a positive image salon and social services, nutritional and financial counseling areas.

In addition to the academic center, the network is building smaller community cancer centers in Monroeville, Erie, Butler and Beaver County. AHN will recruit more than 200 oncology professionals to staff the academic and community centers over the next two years.
