2 dead in shooting at Toronto bowling alley

A man in his 30s and a woman in her 20s are dead after a shooting at a bowling alley in North York on Saturday night.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene while the woman died of her injuries in hospital later, Toronto police said in a news release on Sunday.

Police received a call about gunshots on Samor Road, near Dufferin Street and Lawrence Avenue West in north Toronto, at 10:08 p.m., according to Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service.

Douglas-Cook said police were told that shots were fired outside Playtime Bowl and Entertainment, 33 Samor Rd.

Bullets shattered the front glass doors of the business.

When officers arrived on the scene, they said they found two victims, a man and a woman, lying on the ground outside the bowling alley.

Both were suffering from gunshot wounds.

The man did not have vital signs. He was not conscious and not breathing.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Dave Viljakainen, deputy commander for Toronto Paramedic Services.

The woman was rushed to a Toronto trauma centre, where she later died of her injuries.

Viljakainen said the man was in his 30 while the woman was in her 20s.

Next of kin is being notified.

Douglas-Cook said several people were at the bowling alley at the time of the killings and they scattered after the shooting.

"There were several people in the area. I would imagine just customers of the bowling alley. People were fleeing out of concern [for] their own safety," she said.

Police can't say yet if shooting targeted

Douglas-Cook said it is too early to say if the shooting victims were targeted and police have not yet determined a motive for the killings.

"Currently, we are obviously in the early stages of the investigation so we're trying to get as much evidence we can. They are obviously speaking to witnesses and getting video. We have our forensics team out there as well," she said.

"We are trying to get much as we can so we can try to get some answers to the many questions we have at this point pertaining to this investigation."

Autopsies to be performed on the bodies

No weapons were found at the scene. No suspect information is available.

Police said autopsies on the bodies will be performed on Sunday.

The man and woman are Toronto's 13th and 14th homicide victims of the year.

Officers taped off the bowling alley and the area around it after the shooting to allow investigators to collect evidence.

The bowling alley is closed but roads in the area remain open.

Homicide detectives are expected to provide an update later on Sunday.
