Some people swear by a greasy diner breakfast to cure a hangover. Others go for hair of the dog, drinking a breakfast beer after a night full of brews.
But a company with Princeton University ties has a more medical approach to beating hangovers, and its doing well enough to be featured on ABC's "Shark Tank."
Thrive+, a Texas-based medical company that started at Princeton makes a product it compares to "sunscreen for alcohol," will be featured the popular show on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 10 p.m.
"I think what is most exciting about the opportunity to pitch on 'Shark Tank' is that we will be able to tell our story about how Thrive+(r) was founded at Princeton, explain how Thrive+(r) could reduce alcoholism and other alcohol-use disorders, and showcase our vision for creating a healthier, happier, and safer way to consume alcohol," Princeton graduate and company founder Brooks Powell said. "All in front of 5 million Americans on primetime television and for a solid 10 minutes."
Thrive+ is a capsule that users take after their last alcoholic beverage or right before bed. According to a study the company conducted, product users reported a 50 percent reduction in next-day hangover symptoms. The product works by reducing short-term alcohol withdrawal and helping the liver produce enzymes used to process alcohol another toxic byproducts.
Two Princeton biotech professors with Ph.Ds are on Thrive+'s board of advisors, and all the company's research and development is done at Princeton's campus through Sponsored Research Agreements.
Thrive+ had a $50,000 annualized revenue run-rate nine months ago, and is now at $4 million. The company projects it will be as high as $25 million by the end of the year.
