Person who traveled through Springfield has Legionnaires' disease

An Illinois resident who traveled through Springfield has tested positive for Legionnaires’ disease, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported Saturday.

Additional information about the resident, including their medical condition, wasn’t available, public health officials said.

IDPH is gathering information about the person's recent travels to identify potential sources of exposure to the bacteria that causes the disease, a type of pneumonia.

They said several locations are being investigated, including the Capitol Complex — where Legionella bacteria was confirmed earlier this month — and a hotel where the individual stayed during a January 2018 visit to Springfield. The hotel was not identified.

The disease is contracted by inhaling mist or vapor from a source contaminated with bacteria. Since the preliminary findings of the bacteria in the 14-building Capitol complex, workers have removed aerators from faucets, allowing for a non-aerated and thinner stream of water when washing hands, and showers have been disabled throughout the complex.

Last week, state officials confirmed preliminary tests found Legionella bacteria in the state comptroller’s Springfield office, 325 W. Adams St., which is on a separate water system from the nearby Capitol complex.

In addition, the state continues to wrestle with Legionnaires’ disease at the state-run Illinois Veterans’ Home in Quincy, where 13 people have died from the disease since 2015. Four new cases of the disease have been identified at the home over the past two weeks.
