On Saturday, the folks at Driscoll Children's Hospital hosted a celebration to raise awareness for the thousands of people born each year with heart defects.
The Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Celebration offered a day of fun and relief for pediatric cardiology patients and their families, many of whom have spent a lifetime dealing with heart issues they were born with.
Over at the First Christian Church on Santa Fe Avenue, the festival featured a carnival theme with games and refreshments for the kiddos. It aimed to remember those who've lost their battle with congenital heart defects and honor health professionals who work with them as well as honoring those living with heart defects.
One of those honored was a young girl who was also celebrating a milestone anniversary.
"Wednesday will actually be her five-year 'heartiversary,' since she had her open heart surgery," explained Daniella Bazan, a local mother whose daughter has dealt with heart defects.
The event was a reminder that there is always hope.
"That has saved her life," Bazan said of her daughter's surgery. "It's not going to fix her heart, but it's a repair that has her here today."
Saturday's festivities were part of Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Month.
