A public-school student in Elizabeth, NJ, has died after suffering from the flu, officials said Sunday.
The death was announced by Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer, who confirmed the child had been diagnosed with influenza but was unable to say if the virus was ultimately responsible for the student’s death.
“It is with great sadness that I must report to you that the Elizabeth School District has lost one of its own,” Hugelmeyer said in a statement. “I offer our thoughts, condolences and prayers to the family of our student at this heart-wrenching time.”
If confirmed by health officials, the death would mark the third for children suffering flu-related symptoms in New Jersey this year.
The school district reminded everyone to take the proper precautions, including getting a flu shot.
