The family of an Indiana teen who committed suicide says his flu medication may be the reason.
Charlie Harp, who lived in Franklin Township, was diagnosed with the flu Thursday and prescribed the antiviral drug, Tamiflu, news station WXIn reported.
Hoping to recover quickly, the 16-year-old immediately began the medication, according to his family.
“We started it right in the car, get it in him and get him started,” his aunt and legal guardian, Jackie Ray, told WXIN.
Ray said they weren’t properly warned about the medication’s potential side effects, which can include confusion or abnormal behavior with pediatric patients.
The next day, she grew concerned when she texted him and didn’t get a response.
She sent her husband, Brad Ray, to check on the teen — only for him to make a disturbing discovery. He found the 16-year-old dead from suicide in the garage, according to WXIN.
Shocked, the couple said they searched for answers for what drove the teen to take his life.
Prior to his death, he was excelling at school, where he was involved with the wrestling team, and “happy all the time,” according to his aunt.
“He’s been the same,” Brad Ray told WXIN. “What did we do differently? And it clicked, he just started new medicine.”
The teen was only on the medication for less than 24 hours, but his family said the adverse effects of the drug may have played a role.
“He had a total of two doses,” his aunt said. “Two doses and this is where we are.”
The family is urging others to closely monitor their children’s behavior while taking the drug.
“The thought of someone else not knowing and give it to their children, I can’t bear that,” his aunt said.
